Suspected drunk driver rams into three cars in carpark

SINGAPORE - A suspected drunk driver rammed into two cars while reversing at a carpark, and in his hurry to escape, rammed into a third car.

The incident occurred yesterday evening at the carpark located at Block 475, Jurong Street 41, at about 7.45pm.

According to the Shin Min Daily News, the 45-year-old driver of a black Lexus SUV was seen reversing into a stationary white car. He is believed to have been trying to park his car.

He made a second attempt and this time, hit a grey sedan parked beside the white car.

The driver of the white car got out to confront the driver of the Lexus, but before he could do so, the errant driver attempted to make a quick getaway.

However in his haste, he rammed into another parked car - a silver BMW, at a junction, before mounting a kerb.

An eye-witness, Mr Wu, told the Chinese daily that not wanting the Lexus driver to get away again, the driver of the white car caught up and stood in the path of the Lexus. He also made a call to the police.

Mr Wu said when the police arrived, they conducted a breathalyser test on the Lexus driver, before placing him in handcuffs.

According to a police spokersperson, the man is suspected of drink-driving and investigations are ongoing.

Mr Wu also added that he overheard the Lexus driver explaining to the driver of the white car that his Lexus was "too big" and he didn't know how to park it.

"He looked like a novice driver as the Lexus had a P-plate license and the car looked like it was only eight months old," said Mr Wu.

Residents who crowded around the scene were incredulous when they heard his excuse for the accident. Said one resident: "If he doesn't know how to control a big car, he shouldn't have bought it."

Others said the man is known for drinking heavily and coming home drunk. According to those interviewed, they avoid parking their cars next to his for fear of such accidents occurring.
