Incidents of overhead road structures being hit

Since 2009, there have been 15 cases of vehicles hitting overhead road structures. There were about 130 cases between 2000 and 2008.

Jan 28, 2008: A lorry crashed into an overhead gantry at Sunset Way in Clementi, tearing the sign off its frame and sending it crashing onto a taxi.

The cabby was unhurt but his passenger was taken to hospital after complaining of back pain. The lorry had a crane that was not fully lowered.

March 11, 2010: A crane ploughed into the covered walkway linking Marina Square shopping mall and Pan Pacific Hotel.

The driver had failed to notice that the crane boom was not fully lowered. Several lanes in Raffles Boulevard were closed to traffic till the next day for debris to be cleared.

July 3, 2010: A section of Bukit Timah Road between Fourth and Sixth avenues was closed for six hours after the authorities decided to remove a portion of an overhead bridge that had become crooked (left) after being struck by a crane.

A woman using the bridge was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The road closure caused massive jams stretching back to Newton Circus
