Fastlane: No more close calls

In the future, having a 3G mobile phone on you might help you avoid being knocked down by a car. Or at least, a Nissan. The Japanese manufacturer is working on a GPS-based system to determine the relative position of pedestrians to the car.

For it to work, pedestrians must be carrying new 3G phones. A pedestrian alert will appear onboard the vehicle to warn the driver in a blind-spot situation. Nissan is developing the system with Japanese telecommunications group NTT DoCoMo.
