The New Paper
He smashes, but i pay

WOULDN'T you be upset too if somebody crashed into your car? To make it worse, the driver of the other car is later arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

And insurance companies here don't cover drink drivers.

So accountant Mr Steven Yong may have to pay for repairs, then sue the drink driver. No wonder he?s fuming. On Sunday night at Eunos Crescent, a car smashed into his Toyota Altis, at about 10 pm.

The bonnet was bent out of shape and the headlight on the passenger's side was also damaged.

To top it off, the driver then slammed into three other cars before allegedly trying to escape from the scene.

That prompted Mr Yong, 31, to stand in front of the car to prevent the driver from moving off.

The New Paper reported the drama on Monday. Mr Yong said: "I've owned two other cars before and I've had scratches and dents left on them all the time. I've never managed to catch the culprits.

"But those are minor ones, compared to this case where the driver tried to leave without taking responsibility."

He said his car, which he paid around $60,000 for, was towed to the workshop for repairs on Tuesday.

He said the estimated cost was around $5,000 for replacing the bonnet, headlights, front suspension and re-aligning the car.

The driver, a man in his early 40s, was later arrested for drink driving that night.

Instead of praising him for trying to stop the other driver, Mr Yong said some of his friends, after reading newspaper articles, thought he was the guilty driver.

He said: "I was supposed to be the good one, but some people thought I was the one who caused the accident.

"I don't see myself as a hero, just someone protecting his property and doing a small favour for the other owners.

INVESTIGATION

"Recently, there have been many drink drivers and some friends did tell me I did the right thing." The police said the case is still under investigation.

Mr Yong was told he'll get his car back only next week.

He said: "It's very inconvenient without a car. My wife drives me to work at Tanjong Pagar and then drives to her work-place at MacPherson every morning.

"She also needs the car for work. Now, both of us have to wake up earlier to take public transport to work."
