Look good, protect your eyes

Motorola-Oakley O Rokr

What happens when a mobile phone maker and a sunglass company come together? They create shades that double up as a stereo Bluetooth handsfree - the O Rokr.

With it, you can now protect your eyes from the sun's glare while talking to the (glaring) boss in the office. It plays music too, since it comes with stereo functions and dual ear-phones, which are like little landing gears sticking out of the sides of the frame.

The lenses protect against ultra-violet rays, made from a substance called Plutonite. No wonder the shades look out of this world!

Retail Price: US$249 (S$376)

Available at: Sunglass retail outlets

Clip it on

Sony Ericsson car speakerphone HCB-120

If you prefer to be unmolested by metal and plastic, try getting a speaker phone. Some have to be installed in your car with messy wiring but if you like it neat, try a portable one that you can simply place on your dashboard or clip onto your visor like the Sony Ericsson HCB-120 car speakerphone.

There's a small and neat caller ID and the device can be configured to work with five different phones, and the multi-colour display can assign a different name and colour to each phone.

So, you can assign, say, blue to your phone, red to your wife's and orange to your second phone. But only one phone can be paired with it at any one time.

Retail Price: $178

Available at: Telco retail outlets

Mirror, mirror in my car

Bluetooth handsfree car kit

Always wanted to be Snow White's evil stepmother? Play that role by speaking into this rear-view mirror - really a Bluetooth kit in disguise.

You can receive your calls by speaking into the mirror and even see the number of the person calling you.

Here's how it works: The Bluetooth device clips onto your existing rear view mirror and looks just like one.

But when you get a call on your mobile phone, the call is automatically transferred to the handsfree device where the number of the caller appears on the screen embedded into the mirror. You can yak all you want by speaking into the microphone on the Bluetooth mirror and hear the other party via the built-in speaker.

An attached ear-piece is useful when privacy is needed and you can even transmit the sound to your car's speakers

Cost: $199

Buy at: Carrefour, Mustafa's

When your wrist vibrates

Sony Ericsson MBW-150 Bluetooth Music Watch

Okay, the Music Watch is not really a handsfree talking device but it is too cool not to write about. Besides it links to your mobile phone using Bluetooth.

What the watch does, other than telling time, is to send a vibrating alert when you have a new SMS message.

You can then steal a quick glance at the gizmo - both hands still on the wheel - to see who just messaged you.

You can also control the playback of music from your mobile phone through the watch.

It beeps when you move outside the range of your phone. So if you have just left the cab and your wristwatch is making noises, you know you have left your phone in the cab!

Retail Price: About $400

Available at: Telco retail outlets from next month

Is it a pen?

Plantronics Discovery 665

This is the company that made the headsets for Neil Armstrong's lunar landing when he spoke the words: 'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.'

So expect uber cool with this one-ear Bluetooth earpiece.

The 665 is small, light and fits easily into the ear. It comes with three different interchangeable ear buds of different sizes so you can be sure of the fit.

But what really sets the 665 apart is its accessories.

Many folk hate to walk around looking like a cyborg with a metal slug in the ear. So they put the earpiece into their pocket when it's not in use. Problem is, it gets scratched by the keys and other things in your pocket.

The 665? Just stuff it into what looks like a pen's cap, and then clip it onto your shirt pocket.

The cap is not just for looks - it also doubles up as one part of a charging unit. Snap on the second half, and now it looks like a giant Mont Blanc pen without the black lacquer and the white logo.

The second half can either be a car charger or even a portable one running on a single AAA battery. You are literally charging your ear-piece on the move.

Retail Price: $259 (without the portable battery charger)

Avail at: Retail outlets at Sim Lim and Funan
