Mazda2: Small bundle of fun

FIRST impressions aren't always correct but in the case of the new Mazda2, they should come close.

One glance at the mini hatchback reveals that the design language of this third-generation model has changed dramatically. From a boxily styled, Japanese-looking car previously, it now seems to have been transformed into a smooth and sportily styled Euro hatch.

And these new looks appear to have set the tone for the Mazda2's handling too. There is a European-like quality in the way the Mazda2's suspension has been set up - a pliancy which is not found in most Japanese models.

But while the Mazda2 is fun to drive, it is not overtly sporty. The steering set-up and the ride comfort are still on the soft side. It is much better than the competition and a nice compromise between hardcore and mushy. But it is unlikely to satisfy keener hot hatch drivers, especially when taking the Mazda2 fast into an S-bend.

Those who need to park it in a tighter urban setting will appreciate the electric power steering, which has a quicker ratio than other hatchbacks in its class.

The cabin is refreshingly different too, with a quirky dual compartment glove box and a neat, if somewhat sparse, centre console with clearly laid-out audio and climate controls. Unlike its predecessor, the new car has a dashboard-mounted gear lever.

Interior room is acceptable and the front seats are comfortable enough, while the rear bench is adequate for taller passengers.

There are two trim levels for the Mazda2: the V grade, and the higher R grade.

At only $2,000 more, the latter is clearly the better buy because it comes with a body kit which includes a sportier front grille and bumper, side skirts and a rear roof spoiler; plus 16-inch rims, a six-CD MP3 player and, most importantly, six airbags. The lower V grade has only two front airbags.

But with either variant, the new model offers a higher level of mechanical refinement.
