Mercedes-Benz C180K /C230: Entry-level but excellent

THE term 'entry-level' doesn't usually come with big hopes and great expectations, especially when it is prefixed to a car. If anything, being 'more accessible' comes with connotations - this is one model you don't want to be seen choosing.

But in the case of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class, this isn't true. Actually, there are two entry-level variants - the C180 Kompressor for the four-cylinder range, and the C230 for the V6 line-up. Surprisingly, both are not found wanting despite the seemingly unfavourable prefix.

At $141,888, the C180 is $15,000 cheaper than the C200 and some 28 horses short. But this new C180's power has actually been uprated and is about the same as the old C200. With the improved output and torque, the new car is rather enthusiastic. Unlike previous entry-level C-Class models, it feels perfectly adequate in normal driving. Gone are the times when you used to have to plan an overtaking manoeuvre or time an exit from the junction because your C180 just didn't have enough juice.

And with the new chassis of this third-generation C-Class, the driving dynamics are great. The car feels agile and the steering responsive. Only the sensitive brake pedal and the lightness of the steering mar an otherwise enjoyable drive in the C180.

As for the C230, it is a revelation. Despite the badge, it really has a displacement of 2.5 litres. The C230 is the smallest of the normally aspirated V6 engine range but compared with the C280 and the C350, it has no reason to feel any less worthy. While the C230 may lose out in terms of outright power it is 27 hp less than the C280 and 68 hp short of the C350 - it makes up for it in its balance.

Because of its slightly lower kerb weight, the C230 feels equally competent in a fast corner or a twisty S-bend. Expressway cruising is also sweet because of the smooth V6, which is a delightful alternative to the harsher four-cylinder engines at the lower end of the range.

And since all V6 engines are mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, the C230 benefits from Merc's superb 7G-Tronic transmission, which promises seamless shifts and improved fuel economy.

Only the brand with the three-pointed star can make accessibility this desirable.
