Don't forget the commuters
Reader has his say on increasing fares and commuter surchargers. -myp
The Electronic Road Pricing increases - not to mention more gantries - and the taxi fuel surcharge starting from today will directly or indirectly impact businesses and inflation. I hope the authorities would seriously reconsider any future proposals for fare increases. As a regular commuter, I would say that our feeder bus system is below acceptable standards. Infrequency and 'bunching' are problems. MRT trains are still jam-packed. With more people switching to public transport, are the operators able to cope? I really hope that the authorities would make sure that our public transport system is of an acceptable standard before implementing any fare increases. As for the proposal for cheaper transfers, why not introduce a monthly seasonal pass for, say, $100 of unlimited travel? This would benefit both commuters and operators. We should also not forget about the elderly and the handicapped. The hours during which concession rates can be enjoyed by these groups of people should be extended. Public transport is a major mode of travel for many and their needs should be considered before any changes are made. Transport operators are accountable not only to the company shareholders, but also to commuters. Mr David Soh Poh Huat
