What is 'overdrive' and when should I use it?

The overdrive (O/D) feature in cars with automatic transmission is often used to select the highest gear, which provides better fuel economy and quieter driving.

Car manufacturers recommend that drivers engage O/D except when travelling long distances uphill (when your car shifts gears according to the climbing power required) and when travelling long distances downhill (when the car requires more control through engine braking).
