Bikes not safe on buses and trains

Read with interest the move by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to allow foldable bicycles on board MRT trains and public buses.

Even though it has been highlighted that they are allowed only during off-peak hours, I cannot help but worry about the consequences as trains and public buses are already packed, whether during peak or off-peak hours.

So where is the extra space?

Please do not forget that foldable bicycles still have protruding parts which can cause serious injury when emergency brakes are applied.

I hope the LTA will review this move, even though the cyclists are being environmentally friendly.

I would also suggest that public buses have cargo holds under the floorboards so that bicycles can be stowed safely.

Public education for selfish commuters

The suggestion to penalise MRT commuters who fail to give up their seats to the needy (my paper, July 3) is easier said than done.

What kind of penalty can be imposed on such inconsiderate passengers: A fine or a jail term, or should they be barred from travelling on public transport for a certain period of time?

Would the punishment be practical or would they be too harsh?

We should view the whole issue in perspective and find out why some people are nonchalant about offering seats to others who need them.

Unlike in Japan or South Korea, where the society frowns on those lacking in public decorum, Singaporeans do not attach great importance to courtesy and compassion.

We believe that as long as 'I am all right, I do not care a hoot about others'. After all, sometimes it does not pay to be helpful and considerate.

Perhaps some form of public education is necessary to improve the situation.

Train operators could produce a short video clip showing people giving up their seats to those who need them.

It could serve as a reminder - and perhaps cause uneasiness - to those who are reluctant to offer their seats.
