KUALA LUMPUR - There was a big jump in the number of fatalities with 23 deaths recorded on the sixth day of Ops Sikap XVII.

Motorcyclists topped the list with 16 deaths, followed by seven motorists and passengers.

A total of 1,158 road accidents were recorded as of Monday.

Federal traffic police chief SAC II Abdul Aziz Yusof, in a statement to Bernama yesterday, said expressways, federal roads and state roads recorded the highest fatalities with six deaths each, followed by municipal roads (three) and other roads (two).

He said 11,027 summonses were issued to motorists and motorcyclists for various traffic offences.

Monday's fatalities brought to 86 the number of deaths in the past six days of Ops Sikap, held in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration.

In Ipoh, police issued 257 summonses for various traffic offences during an operation at the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza.

Bukit Aman traffic police officer Deputy Supt Ahmad Adnan Basri said the operation, from 8am to 8pm on Monday, also saw 10 express bus drivers being hauled up.

'Among the offences committed by the drivers were talking on their mobile phones while behind the wheel, overtaking on the emergency lane and road hogging,' he said yesterday.

The drivers, said DSP Ahmad Adnan, were nabbed by policemen posing as passengers travelling from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Tanjung Malim and from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh.

At the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza, 25 bus drivers were summoned for offences such as speeding and brake light failure, he added.
