KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Two men were assaulted and their car damaged by a group of Mat Rempit(an individual who participates in illegal street racing) after they accidentally knocked down a motorcyclist early yesterday.

A traffic police spokesman said the incident happened about 4.30am yesterday in Jalan Travers as the victims were heading towards Bangsar from the city in their Proton Waja.

"The car knocked down a youth on a motorcycle near the National Museum.

"Minutes later, dozens of motorcyclists, believed to be the youth's friends, surrounded the car.

"They used their helmets to break the front and rear windscreens of the car, and assaulted the two men."

A passerby called police and a patrol car arrived at the scene soon after that.

Three youths, in their early 20s, were detained. The others were released after questioning by police.

The two men and the injured motorcyclist were taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.

A witness told police the car was speeding before it knocked down the motorcyclist.

"We have taken urine samples from the two men in the car, who are in their 20s, to see if they were drunk during the accident," said the spokesman.
